In today’s email, I am going to tell you a short story of a personal experience I have had recently and my solution to it. It’s also accompanied by an audio recording of Jordan Peterson on the importance of cleaning your room which has relevance to the post. I hope you like the addition.
Recently, I was feeling foggy and lacking clarity. I get like this sometimes and it only lasts maybe 2 or 3 days. This time it lasted around 10 days. In true JP fashion, following his advice, I started by cleaning up some old stuff that was in my immediate surroundings, which then turned into a full room renovation. Here’s the result…
This is the most organised I’ve been in regards to workspace... it’s super comforting. This is where I design, upload, write, read, manage, and speak to you all when working on the Newsletter, Jordan Peterson Archive, or my new page 12 More Rules.
I write a lot of things down. Goals, reminders, to-do lists, a % budget for any income, important dates, and content ideas. It wasn’t until I spoke to @developmentbydavid on the podcast a few days ago why I do this so meticulously. Obviously, it’s easier to manage my workload and it helps organise things and set priorities but the more practical explanation he made me aware of was this:
• “It externalises your mind”.
• Externalising your thoughts, ideas and processes will go a long way in you not becoming overwhelmed and overrun.
We only have so much space in our heads, attention to expend, and focus to direct and so we have to protect these aspects of our being.
If you’re feeling a bit stuck, lacking clarity, feel foggy or overwhelmed, look at your immediate surroundings. What can you fix? You’ll soon pick up on things that need your attention.
In the same way, being around the wrong people has a negative effect on you, so does the mess and lack of orderliness of your immediate surroundings.
Environment matters. Make it manageable. Organise it. I truly believe that it’s an extension of your psychological state.
Externalise. Organise. Perform Better.
Lewy.
